Staff Structural Engineer (3 – 6 years of experience)

Perry & Associates is a structural engineering firm located in downtown Chicago. We provide structural and forensic engineering services for a wide variety of clients including architects, building management companies, private businesses and individuals.

About the Position

We are seeking structural engineers with experience and interest in design, investigation, analysis, and evaluation of building structures, particularly existing building structures. As a Staff Structural Engineer, you will work under the direct supervision of project engineers to assist in the design and analysis of new and existing building projects. You will also have the opportunity to gain project management experience on small projects, including development of scopes and proposal, direct interaction and coordination with clients, and schedule management. Typical projects will include a variety of modern and historic materials such as concrete, steel, wood, and masonry structural systems. Additional duties include field investigations to document existing conditions, construction site observations and documentation, and drafting of structural plans and details. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform local field investigations to document existing conditions and ongoing construction projects

  • Develop and detail portions of project designs for new and existing building structures

  • Perform calculations for new and existing structural building elements, including gravity and lateral system elements

  • Review and interpret technical documents and designs

  • Review and evaluate building codes and specifications

  • Author technical reports and project correspondence

  • Attendance and participation in project meetings with clients and other design professionals

  • Develop project scopes and proposals based on client requests

What You’ll Need

  • An interest in solving problems in the built world

  • BS or MS in civil /structural engineering

  • 3 – 6 years of related structural engineering experience. Experience with existing building structures is preferred.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Willingness to adapt to new project types and tasks

  • Able to perform physical field work, including climbing ladders, performing visual observations from afar/rooftops/scaffolding, using precision instruments, etc.

  • Current U.S. driver’s license (required)

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Experience with AutoCAD and the development of structural design documents

  • Experience with structural analysis software such as RISA-3D

  • Experience with material codes including ACI 318, AISC 360, NDS, etc. is preferred

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification required

  • Legal ability to work in the United States
